Quinta Mazatlan to honor McAllen ISD student volunteers

Students in the International Baccalaureate Volunteer Organization (IBVO) at McAllen ISD’s Lamar Academy will receive a certificate of appreciation as one of Quinta Mazatlan’s Volunteers of the Year 2017.

Katherine Scalise, a senior and president of IBVO, will represent the IBVO at a Volunteer Appreciation Day Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 13 at Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen (600 Sunset Drive). Tours of the sanctuary will follow.

Quinta Mazatlan Volunteer Coordinator Jose Luis Zuniga will present the award.

“Volunteering with Quinta Mazatlan has given me a greater appreciation of wildlife, encouraged me to get more involved in the preservation of our environment and helped me create memories with friends,” Scalise said.

Quinta Mazatlan is “grateful for the work, consistency and energy IBVO brings to the volunteer program at Quinta Mazatlan.”  Quinta Mazatlan works to enrich people’s lives by sharing knowledge about birds, plants and environmental stewardship in South Texas.

McAllen ISD has two learning frameworks for students in all grades. There is the International Baccalaureate and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math). The IB Diploma Programme is for high school juniors and seniors. It is based at Lamar Academy. Students who graduate with an IB Diploma can receive at least 24 college credit hours at any state university in Texas.
